NSIRC and ASEAN take steps towards Postgraduate Education Collaboration
Jakarta, Indonesia – Prof Tat-Hean Gan, Director of Membership and Innovation at TWI Ltd, has visited the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) headquarters, in Jakarta, Indonesia, for a meeting to discuss potential partnerships.
The meeting focused on collaborations in the field of science and technology, and was hosted by Dr. Zurina Moktar, Assistant Director and Head of the Science and Technology Division of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Department.
In attendance at the meeting were representatives from ASEAN Secretariat, including Dr. Vanny Narita, and Ms. Rizky Inayati from Science and Technology Division.
Discussions identified areas where ASEAN member states could benefit from agreements with private sector organizations and academic institutions, with the aim of developing innovative solutions that address important safety challenges facing the Association.
Furthermore, discussions have also taken place regarding collaboration agreements with National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Indonesia and PCIEERD DOST Philippines on the NSIRC PhD programmes. Both agreements are at the consultation stage and was previously proposed through the ASEAN’s Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (COSTI).
Speaking after the meeting, Professor Gan said, “We were very pleased to discuss the tremendous potential for industry focused academia with ASEAN member states and their individual technology needs. Collectively, we can see that there are many opportunities for long-term industrial partnerships that could produce vital innovations and solve complex technology challenges specific to the needs of the regional populations.”

Since June 2022, TWI has signed six memorandums of understanding (MoU) with academic institutions across Asia and in Europe. They have included; Parahyangan Catholic University, Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB), Universiti Sains Malaysia, Monash University Malaysia, Hellenic Mediterranean University, and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras.
Each MoU has created a new NSIRC International location and will bring high quality, industry focused postgraduate academia for the benefit of society.
A NSIRC International PhD opportunity is currently available with KMUTNB in Thailand, while the first students to start at NSIRC Greece have commenced their research with the Hellenic Mediterranean University in Crete.
