One of Britain's top security companies consulted TWI about the quality systems applied to its products and services. Systems governing design, manufacturing, installation and servicing procedures at Chubb were assessed to BS 5750 Part 1, ISO 9001 and EN 29001.
These are international quality systems standards, which establish an organisation's ability to provide an item or service to its clients' requirements. They confirm to a supplier or customer that the firm they are dealing with has systems in place to ensure that a product or service meets all of the customer's needs.
The standards define quality-related activities of a production procedure from the enquiry stage through design, manufacture and development, to installation and servicing of the product.
Richard Halls of Chubb said: "Hopefully, meeting BS 5750 requirements will help us to widen our range within the industry. It will open the field for outside companies to purchase materials and products from us. We could operate without BS 5750 but it would certainly curtail our activities."
In future it is likely that all quality systems will have to be verified for their compliance with the standards as more and more manufacturers and suppliers are demanding this as a business requirement.
Advice on planning and implementing quality systems to meet BS 5750 requirements is one of TWI's services.
