Geo-Coat Project Featured in Corrosion Protection Magazine

Tue, 23 January, 2024

The Geo-Coat project, which has included TWI as partners, has been featured in the latest issue of IPCM’s Corrosion Protection magazine.

The January 2024 edition of the magazine includes an article, ‘Development of Novel and Cost-Effective Corrosion Resistant Coatings for High Temperature Geothermal Applications,’ which details the in-situ testing of an LMD-HEA2 coated turbine component section in a geothermal environment.

The Geo-Coat project focused on improving the lifetime of materials used in geothermal energy plants through the development of anti-corrosion coatings.

The turbine component was coated before being exposed to a geothermal environment for 8 weeks at the Hellisheiði Power Station in Iceland. Following the exposure, the component was analysed for signs of corrosion.

The magazine article details the results of these tests, highlighting how the coating provided good resistance to the oxygenated test environment. Because the entire component was not coated, it was possible to assess the effects on the non-coated areas in comparison to the coated sections.

The results showed that areas at the coating substrate interface and areas that were not coated at all were the only areas showing signs of corrosion.

The tests demonstrate the effectiveness of the coating in delivering corrosion resistance, proving that it could be used in both this and similar oxygen-heavy environments.

The Geo-Coat project was funded by the European Union’s H2020 research and innovation programme, Grant agreement, no. 764086.
