TWI took delivery of a 20 ton production linear friction welding machine from Thompson Friction Welding in September. The machine was installed and commissioned in time for the mid-September Aerospace Panel meeting, attended by 40 people from the leading aerospace companies around the world. Demonstration welds were made during their visit to the Friction Laboratory.
This investment will allow TWI to support Members in the development of prototype production parts, such as bladed discs (blisks) and for components built up by linear friction welding to reduce the buy-to-fly ratio by significantly reducing the amount of titanium machined.
