Manchester Metropolitan University and Chulalongkorn University Sign NSIRC Interntaional MoU
Cambridge, United Kingdom - The Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), United Kingdom, and Chulalongkorn University (CU), Thailand, have become the latest universities to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with TWI towards joining the NSIRC International Programme.
The ceremony took place in April 2023 and marks the beginning of a new, long-term partnership that aims to bring together the unique expertise of each institution. And in the process, create solutions that address real-world, complex and urgent global technology challenges. The new partnership will also facilitate knowledge exchange and sharing, with researchers from all three institutions benefitting from exposure to a diverse range of perspectives and approaches to research.
By signing the agreement, each organisation has outlined their commitment to producing innovative projects in the field of engineering, with a specific focus towards enhancing knowledge transfer, as well as collaborative research efforts that will advance technologies and solves challenges in areas such as Smart Manufacturing, Net Zero, Advanced Materials, Structural Integrity, and Non-Destructive Testing.
At the core of the agreement, MMU, CU and TWI will collaborate on industry-focused doctoral research that will take place in Thailand.
Attending the MoU signing on behalf of TWI and NSIRC was Heather Claxton, TWI Associate Director of Research and Innovation Global Operations. Speaking after the MoU Heather said, "We are thrilled to sign this MoU with our new partners Manchester Metropolitan University and Chulalongkorn University, and through our shared vision, expand NSIRC’s unique and impactful education programme into Thailand. Together with parent organisation TWI, NSIRC has a mission to create leading engineering education that can benefit society globally. Therefore, by joining forces with Manchester Metropolitan University and Chulalongkorn University, we will all be in a better position to harness the potential of our respective knowledge and expertise, and combine it through industrial and academic research to drive meaningful innovation across fields from materials through to advance manufacturing and digitalisation.”

Professor Peter Kelly, Director of the Advanced Materials and Surface Engineering Research Centre, attended the signing on behalf of MMU. He said, "We are delighted to have signed this MoU with TWI and Chulalongkorn University, marking a new era of collaboration and innovation. This partnership builds on our shared commitment to creating a positive impact through world-class research, and we look forward to working closely together in pursuit of this goal. MMU partnered with TWI in 2022 to establish the Advanced Materials and Digitalisation Innovation Centre, part of TWI Innovation Network, and we look forward to enhancing the partnership through the NSIRC International Programme.”
Signing on behalf of CU was Professor Anongnat Somwangthanaroj, Vice Dean. She said, “CU is proud to join forces with MMU and TWI in this exciting new collaboration. Our shared commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility makes us natural partners in pursuit of innovative solutions to some of Thailand’s most pressing challenges. We look forward to working together closely in the years to come.”
NSIRC International Programme receives funding and industrial support from the Lloyd's Register Foundation (LRF). A founding partner of NSIRC in the UK, LRF is a global charity supporting engineering-focused academia that can improve safety and save lives at home and in the workplace.
Providing funding and industrial expertise, LRF will support NSIRC International PhD Studentships that complement the foundation's priorities. These include at-sea assets, digital systems, sustainability, food supply systems and physical infrastructure.
